Meningitis B vaccine Bexsero

Protecting your child from Meningitis B with Bexsero

Why should I vaccinate my child against Meningitis B?

Meningitis B is the leading infectious killer of young children in the UK

Meningitis is a life threatening infection which even if survived can lead to very serious complications including loss of limbs, epilepsy and brain damage

What happens if my child is older than 2 months at the time of the roll out?

There is a planned 'catch up' program for babies aged 3 and 4 months at the time of roll out but If your child is older than 4 months at the time of the roll out they will not be included in the vaccination program and so will not benefit from the protection offered.

How much protection does Bexsero give my child?

The vaccine, Bexsero, is thought to provide 73% protection against meningitis B.

Is Bexsero available privately?

The vaccination has been offered privately by GPs for some time, at Southdowns clinic we have vaccinated over 200 children with the Bexsero Meningitis B vaccine.

For more information and Frequently asked questions about Meningitis B you can visit the Meningitis Now website or the NHS website.

The vaccine is given as two injections 2-6 months apart.

A year has passed since experts recommended that the government make the Meningitis B vaccine available to all children from 2 months old. In this time the government have failed to agree a price with manufacturer GSK.

“One year on, we appeal that a decision is made imminently,” Dr Ian Maconichie, of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health doctor, told the BBC.

Each year in the UK there are around 1,870 cases of meningitis B, but improved care – and early detection – means that most children can now make a full recovery.

However Meningitis B is still fatal in one out of 10 cases, and roughly one in four people affected by the virus are left with long-term difficulties – such as deafness, amputation, epilepsy and learning difficulties.

At Southdowns clinic in Emsworth we offer the vaccine to everyone from 2 months old.
